Choices

If you do something and then blame circumstances, upbringing, genes (!?), or really anything else other than yourself, are you really free? We can’t change what happens to us (you seeing a box of cookies in the kitchen), but we can for sure decide what to think and do about it (eat the cookies, or not).

Luck

Anomalies aside (crypto millionaires, anyone? 🙂); if you don’t work over the weekends (yes, plural) at some point in your career, you’ll end up working for someone that did.

There’s a great quote by Thomas Jefferson that fits here: “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.”

People management

In people management, things are never black or white. Mostly grey, in more than 50 shades. Make sure you hear both sides of the story before making any decisions.

Retrospective

If you want to learn about yourself, do a retrospective at least once per month. Journaling will help.

Lead

Before you demand more from other people, show how ‘more’ looks like.

Failure

Welcome failure in your life, but be wary of its two-edged blade. Make sure you learn from it and grow, instead of falling into self-pity and never getting back up. Looking back at your life, you’ll see that those local minima (math lingo alert! 🙂) were your defining moments.

Enough

Too much is never enough.
On average, we have more than we need. When you’ve covered all of Maslow’s needs, and you start to yearn for more, that’s when usually problems start.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting and yearning and working towards more, but beware of the reason for doing that and make sure you’re grateful for what you’ve got; because wanting more and never being happy with what you’ve got, will lead down the path of disappointment and depression.

Happiness Starter

What if you’re the one who brings a happy face to every interaction? How much would the quality of your life change if only 0.5% of the people reciprocate? Start small and see the positivity around you compound. Don’t get discouraged, life’s too short to be dragging a 🙁 face around. What happens to you is not your choice – what you make of it, is.

Finishing books

Don’t be afraid to not finish a book. Reread the good ones.

TIME equals MONEY

You’ve probably already heard that time is your most precious token. No, I’m not talking about crypto here – although, funnily enough, there’s also a token named like that, which is also not doing really well lately 🤦, but I digress…

Anyways, as the physicist, Albert-László Barabási once wrote:

“Time is our most valuable non-renewable resource, and if we want to treat it with respect, we need to set priorities.”

I came across an interesting concept by several authors (here’s just one for example) where they suggest that you calculate your hourly rate, and see how much does watching TV cost you. If you do that, you may realize that you’re throwing away several tens of thousands of dollars per year (logically, the more you make, the more you lose). And, that just may get you to rethink how you’re spending your time. I wrote about why using TV as a news source is not the best idea and how To-Do Lists may help you in setting your priorities.

So, TL;DR: invest time in that which is most important to you. And, I’ll also say this, because there is no balance: if at this point in your life most of your time goes to work, so be it – make the most of it and don’t feel bad about it.
